William Raymond, Calne

William Raymond, Calne

William Raymond is listed in the directories of 1791 and 1795 as a clockmaker however he was obviously making clocks earlier than this judging by the style of the dial (very similar to the eight day example by William Raymond in stock). Both clocks date from around 1775-80. William was a member of the Raymond family of clockmakers operating in Lydeway and Stert near Devizes. When the opportunity arises it is interesting to compare these two dials with those signed by Charles Raymond (of Lydeway) of the same period and it can easily be concluded that the dials have been engraved by the same hand, perhaps another family member.

The brass dial is 11″ square and has a subsidiary seconds dial and a large calendar aperture. The movement is a birdcage type of thirty hour duration which strikes the hours on a bell. The oak case is of darkened pine ( a rare survivor)  and is 79″ (2m) tall.
