Raymond, Lydeway

Raymond, Lydeway

This clock is 85” tall and has a 12” arched dial. This is probably one of the most sophisticated clocks made by this sought after maker. It boasts a number of features: moonphase, strike/silent (usually seen on London clocks), date calendar, month calendar (rare) and a subsidiary seconds dial. The movement also strikes hours on a bell. The moon disc is attractively painted and Raymond uses his trademark red wax for Lideway name on the dial and other decorations. This clock dates to around 1760/1770. The eight day movement strikes the hours on a bell. Charles Raymond was born in Stert in December 1741. He married Ann Alexander in 1762. He lived in a building that was later to become the Clock Inn at Lydeway and erected a clock dated 1773 on the outside wall. Murders are recorded to have been carried out in the vicinity of the inn, with bodies having been discovered many years later.
