Peter Bower, Redlench (sic)

Peter Bower, Redlench

Peter Bower was born In Downton in 1715 and was married in St Martin’s in 1739, and at that time he was a blacksmith. Seven children were baptised in Downton parish church. Peter was buried on the 5th July 1795 at Hindon. He became a very prolific maker of thirty hour clocks, and a few eight day clocks have been recorded

This is one of his early clocks, a simple single handed type with a 10″ dial and a thirty-hour birdcage movement, striking the hours hourly. This is a relatively rare example as it retains its trademark Bower pendulum. Intriguingly it comes with its history of ownership by the Osman family in nearby Alderbury.

The oak case is characteristic of his work and of the immediate Redlynch and Downton area during this period. The overall height is 79.5″ (just over 2m).

An exceptionally original example
