John Stratton, Devizes

John Stratton was born in 1765 and baptised in Minchinhampton. He was listed as a watchmaker in a Devizes directory for 1811 and was working in the Market Place by 1822. He died in 1834.

The single sheet dial is made of brass, engraved and then silvered. This style of dial was popular in the West Country in the 1820’s, and certainly with Mr Stratton’s customers in Devizes – see the other examples in stock.

This mahogany cased clock is 90″ (2.29m) tall. A leaning “West Country” case with its characteristic wavy edged hood door, ebony stringing, and hood frieze above the door. The trunk corners are chamfered.

The 12″ dial has an engraved eagle with the motto “Tempus Fugit” in the arch and flowers in the corners., together with seconds dial and calendar. The clock has an eight day movement and strikes each hour on a bell.
