Hewett, Marlborough

Hewett, Marlborough

This clock is 95” tall and has 12” arched dial. This clock has a rocking Father Time automaton in the arch which moves backwards and forwards with the beat of the clock. This is a clock of eight day duration, with calendar and subsidiary seconds the dial. The dial itself is engraved with a country scene with trees church, house and a shepherd and sheep. The clock case is of English oak and has side windows to view the movement. This clock is as authentic and as right as they come with the maker’s label inside the door, the case being a typical Hewett case. The label is dated 16th October 1767 which would probably indicate the date of sale. George Hewett is probably one of the two most famous Wiltshire makers and is noted nationally, famous for his complex musical and astronomical clocks. He was born in about 1733 and married in 1756.
