Fry, Sutton Benger

Fry, Sutton Benger

The clock is 90.5″ tall and has a 12″ square dial. The movement, of 30 hour duration, strikes the hours on a bell. John Fry was a quaker and the father of Joseph Fry who founded the chocolate factory in Keynsham. The clock dates from around 1740-50 and is very unusual and rare; from stylistic considerations this clock was probably made by the Hadwen family in Liverpool who were also Quaker clockmakers. At this time, there was a network of Quaker clockmakers who traded their clocks with another, probably to enable specialism and economy. As can be seen it has a moonphase in the dial centre (a very rare feature) together with a calendar. Altogether, a very interesting dial.
