dial of grandfather clock, John Morse, Lyneham

John Morse, Lyneham:  John Morse was born in Dauntsey in 1791 and is listed in trade directories from 1848 to 1859. In the 1841 and 1851 censuses he is recorded living in Clack (Lyneham). He is probably the same John Morse worked in Malmesbury until some time after 1833. The antique clock's pretty 12" painted dial has corners decorated with flowers and gold leaf, and also has a calendar feature and a subsidiary dial for seconds. The traditional local style mahogany case is 84" tall overall, has a good rich colour with inlays and stringing and has a swan neck pediment with a single brass finial. The thirty hour movement strikes the hours on a bell.
