Wiltshire Watch and Clockmakers Volume 3

Volumes 3 of a history of Wiltshire clock makers, called Wiltshire Watch and Clockmakers, by John Young –

Salisbury, Wilton, Amesbury, Downton, Mere, Hindon, Tisbury & South Wiltshire.

This book is about the people who were engaged in the clock and watchmaking business in Wiltshire from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.

It includes directories of clockmakers, watchmakers, finishers, repairers and retailers, whether in business on their own account or employed by someone else.

Their families, associates, activities and movements outside Wiltshire are also included. The book presents an overview of the trades and occupations of Wiltshire and looks at the numbers of clockmakers in relation to the population and at their clients.

It also considers the effect of expanding industrialisation in the nineteenth century and the effects of the railways and factory system on the clockmaking trade. Health and changing religious beliefs and other social issues are also considered.

The book therefore contain a wealth of information for the family and local historian, for those who are interested in antique clocks and clockmakers and for those buying, selling or owning clocks who want to identify the makers and date clocks.
