Joseph Coombe, Melksham

Joseph Coombe, Melksham

Joseph Coombe was born in 1761 and he was probably apprenticed to Henry Link of Bristol in 1773. He later moved to Melksham to work for Edward Rudd and had set up his own business by 1783. He died in 1842.

This clock  dates from around 1790, perhaps a bit earlier. The dial is a classic Wilson 12″ strawberry dial with a woman and sheep in the arch together with gesso decoration.

The case is a deep oak colour and features a long arched door with fine medullary rays. The hood is topped by three brass finials and has side windows to view the movement. In total a very handsome, classic style clock of the period.

Overall height 88″, (224cm)
