Wiltshire Clocks - a history

You can buy the first volume of a history of Wiltshire clock makers, called Wiltshire Watch and Clockmaker, Volume 1: Chippenham, Swindon, Marlborough and North Wiltshire
by John Young.

This book is about the people who were engaged in the clock and watchmaking business in North Wiltshire from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.

The area covered by this volume is a line along, and to the north of, the A4 road. It includes a directory of clockmakers, watchmakers, finishers, repairers and retailers, whether in business on their own account or employed by someone else.

Their families, associates, activities and movements outside Wiltshire are also included. The book presents an overview of the trades and occupations of Wiltshire and looks at the numbers of clockmakers in relation to the population and at their clients.

It also considers the effects of expanding industrialisation in the nineteenth century and the effects of the railways and factory system on the clockmaking trade. Health and changing religious beliefs and other social issues are also considered.

The book therefore contains a wealth of information for the family and local historian, for those who are interested in antique clocks and clockmakers and for those buying, selling or owning clocks who want to identify the makers and date clocks.

It is published by Sedgehill Publishing, Trowbridge ISBN 0-9547055-0-5 193 pages. Paperback. 248 x 171mm. 85 illustrations + numerous tables and transcriptions. Detailed contents and index.
