John
Fry, Melksham
A small,
slim wellproportioned antique longcase clock by John Fry of Melksham.
Fry was born on July 18th 1701, apprenticed in London in about 1715,
and married in 1726. He was the father of Joseph Storr Fry, the founder
of J S Fry the chocolate manufacturer. Fry, a Quaker all his life, died
in 1775.
This clock dates from the later part of his life. The 11.5 inch brass
dial is decorated with string of pearls spandrels and features
a seconds dial and calendar feature. The silvered dial centre is finely
engraved, and bears the name John Fry, Melksham. The brass
eight-day movement strikes the hours on a bell. The slender oak case
features a starburst inlay, and the hood has a dentil moulding, with
integral columns to the door.
Height: just under 6' 5"
