The dial of a grandfather clock by John Flewell

The movement of a grandfather clock by John Flewell

John Flewell
John Flewell was born about 1716 and was apprenticed to William Monk of Berwick St John. He is known to have also worked in Cherhill and Market Lavington. He died in 1756. This singled-handed clock has a 10" square brass dial with a finely matted centre and its birdcage movement is of thirty hour duration and strikes the hours on a bell. This movement also exhibits the rare regional feature of having a spike at each of the four corners of the base of the movement which sit on the seatboard of the case. The oak case is of very good colour and has a long trunk door, the hood being of a rustic and primitive design. The overall height of this clock is 6' 10".
