Joel Ettry, Bishops Cannings: An oak longcase clock by John Ettry,
Horton, near Devizes. He was born about 1715 and was buried in Bishops
Cannings in 1786. The Ettrys were an interesting family of clock makers
working in the 18th Century in Bishops Cannings and Horton, near Devizes.
Joel was the son of John and he had two brothers, Jacob and John, who
were also clockmakers. This clock dates from the later part of the 18th
century, c1772 (this date is engraved on the clock movement). The solid
and heavy oak case has a flat pediment with a dentil moulding and a blind
fretwork panel, integral columns to the hood and a long, narrow trunk
door. The 11" wide prettily engraved brass dial is typical of the local
dials of this period with both a large calendar and seconds dial. Of thirty
hour duration, the movement strikes the hour on a bell. The overall height
of this clock is 6'7". This clock has now been sold Return to top |
