About
Us
Wiltshire Clocks is run by Jan Trueman and her husband Paul, who
both grew up in the county. Fifteen years ago they bought their first grandfather
(tallcase) clock and this eventually led them to set up their business, buying,
restoring and selling antique
clocks. Most of the clocks and barometers they sell originated
in Wiltshire, England, or nearby between 1730 and 1850.
Jan
believes that the
clocks allow people to own an aesthetic working piece of local history. The clocks
are sold to local customers and also to people living in the rest of the UK and
abroad who require a clock that gives them a link to their family origins - or
who just want a good investment.
A
recent sale, for example, was to a lady from Virginia, USA, who had relations
who came from Devizes. She bought a clock to remind her of Wiltshire.
Jan
and Paul travel all over the country in search of antique
clocks
to 'bring back home' after they started life in Wiltshire. They are often asked
to find clocks from specific towns, both in Wiltshire and elsewhere. The clocks
are restored by professional craftsmen whose families have been clockmakers for
generations.
The
clocks - technically known as longcase or tallcase clocks - range from simple
oak cottage clocks of the Georgian period to elaborate mahogany pieces of the
early Victorian. The clocks made in Wiltshire have their own distinctive style,
which Wiltshire Clocks once again allows people to enjoy.
